Movie: Kidnap; Star Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Minissha Lamba, Vidya Malvade, Rahul Dev and Reema Lagoo; Director: Sanjay Gadhvi; Rating: *1/2
The movie starts in a different manner unlike others, which depicts the suffering of the hero in his jail tenure in forms of sketches. By seeing that one comes to know how much the poor chap had suffered and is filled with utmost hatred with the person who had put him behind the bars.
The movie has the same old stuffs with the same old storyline. There is nothing new or interesting in Kidnap to watch. It has the same zest as we saw in the movie 'Zinda'. It has the same old revenge seeking formula. One does something wrong in childhood and repents for it later in his adulthood. The tag line, "Bachpan ki karne, aur Jawani mein bharni" surely goes the way.
The theme of the movie is clearly understood by its name; 'Kidnap'. The plot revolves around a girl named Sonia (Minissha Lamba) who lives with her mother, Mallika (Vidya Malvade) because when she was ten years old her parents got divorced. Few days prior to her birthday, she gets kidnapped by Kabir Sharma (Imran Khan).
The kidnapper is interested in talking only to her father, Vikrant Raina (Sanjay Dutt) who is filthy rich, with whom the kidnapper has to settle some old dues.
Vikrant has to follow a particular set of rules laid by the kidnapper in order to free his daughter. The twist is that the kidnapper gives Vikrant clues in will help him get closer to his daughter.
The movie kick-starts with a song which dares to bare Minissha in bikinis and two pieces. All throughout the movie one gets to see for the first time — Minissha Lamba in her sexy and seductive avatar. The clues which are given by Imran are good and is obediently followed by Sanjay Dutt. Though one finds some mistakes in it too. Sanjay owns cash worth $51 Billion. Imran tells Sanjay to reach Panvel station at a given time to find the clue to which Sanjay says it is not possible in such a peak time. Imran then tells him to fly and come but Sanjay (please note again: $51 billion owner) cannot afford a helicopter (it seems) and instead robs other people's cars and bikes to reach his destination.
We get to see some very some very strange bonding and emotional conversations between the Minissha and Sanjay when they get to see each other (both handcuffed)It seems that Minissha had been offered the role in this movie only to expose (which she did a little too much). The interesting part is that one gets to see Minissha in all the more revealing clothes after she is been kidnapped (who on Earth will do that); and that did attract Imran towards her.
The movie did have some good camera work. The sequence shot in the jail was worth praise.
Talking about the characters in the movie; Sanjay was impressive. Imran played his character well and fitted into the role. He did prove he is a typical 'Khan' and has a long way to go. Vidya too was worth a watch. Minissha gave a direct message to actresses who have revealed and gained praises that she is no less and as surely joined the queue.The music of the film is strictly ok, apart from a few songs like Mit Jaaye, Hey Ya, Mausam. The action sequence is good specially Imran jumping phenomenon.
Sanjay Gadhvi has not at all done justice to his work and small mistakes are in plenty. We expected more of quality work from him.
First half of the movie is tolerable but the second half irritates you to the core. It can be clearly felt that the movie is being dragged without a point. All in the entire movie fails to grab an attention and has in no sense done justice to the hypes created.
A Big Disappointment, Indeed.
drona -review
Drona is about an orphan Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan), who has never experienced or felt love. The only thing that gives Aditya comfort is a magical blue rose petal that comes wafting into his room, making him smile through his tears. One fine day, the blue petal leads him to a beautiful Kada (a thick bangle like bracelet), which he starts wearing around his wrist. The Evil Riz Raizada (Kay Kay Menon) a descendant of the Asuras (Demons) has become by now desperate in his quest for the special ‘Amrith’, the only missing link in his grand plan of taking over the world. To get to the Amrith, he knows he will have to defeat Drona. But Riz is unaware of who and where Drona is!
Soon at the Riz magic show, Aditya and Riz come face to face. Riz sees the kada around Aditya’s hand, and recognises him as Drona. Aditya is now running for his life. Just as he is about to be captured by Riz, Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) comes to his rescue. She reveals her own identity i.e Drona’s bodyguard and Aditya’s real identity to him but he refuses to believe he is Drona, the savior of the world. Drona is in real the son of Queen Jayati Devi (Jaya Bachchan)!
The fight now is between the good and the evil. Its Drona versus Riz Raizada! Drona has to succeed to save his mother and the world!
Drona Review
On asked what the audience should expect from Drona, Abhishek said “I want them to expect a lot. I never say this, but I want them (the audience) to expect the world. Goldie proved that my expectations weren’t high enough. So I want them to expect a lot more.” Woah, not bad I thought! Yet, not trusting Abhishek as I read something similar from him about Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, I went in with low expectations.
And yet I was heavily disappointed. Disappointed to see Abhishek being part of such a poorly directed low quality movie. Disappointed for the fact that a huge amount of money was wasted on great special effects in a horribly illogical film!
Gustaki Maaf are Kay Kay’s two most favorite words in the movie. Gustaki Maaf Goldie Behl saab, but seriously what were you thinking? Even a 12 year old school kid could have scripted a better superhero story for his school project! Its hard to believe I just saw a movie as bad as Drona. Try figuring this out..
Drona and his bodyguard Sonia are in the middle of a vast desert and out of nowhere, Sonia is pulled into a huge sea! Sea in a desert? Update: Such a location where the Desert meets the sea does exist! Director Goldie Behl says “We got exactly that place it was “Desert meets the Ocean”. After seeing this Abhishek was stunned to see such a fantastic location.”
Which century or era does this movie belong to? We start off with a modern town with all the high funda cars, cut to the next scene we have a palace in a desert that looks dated, back to the early regime of kings!
Drona is warned, open the door, you’ll meet death. He opens and voila out comes a ferocious and filthy looking monster. One punch from our absolutely unfit-for-a-superhero-role Abhishek, down goes the monster!
Jaya Bachchan (Drona’s mother) is mummified, yet tears trickle from her eyes!
If Love Story 2050 had the butterfly which magically assisted Harman Baweja to find a way when in trouble. Drona has a blue flower petal!
Mind you these are just a few of the numerous senseless scenes that Goldie and his Drona team treat us with. Can be forgiven in the name of Fantasy, but then there is hardly a connection between any two scenes.
The characters are poorly written. Kay Kay’s character is more clownish than devilish. The extent of his evil powers and its repercussions if he succeeds is not clear. Same goes with the main character of Drona. His strengths and power are not dealt with in detail which is so very important for a superhero flick.
For all Goldie Behl had to tell, he could have easily reduced the runtime to about 1 and a half hours instead of its actual 2 hours 15 mins runtime. Would have reduced the cost of making and the viewers pain. Though, thankfully it wasn’t longer.
Coming to the songs, which have no significance in the movie, are unbearable. The only thing that stands out in Drona is the brilliant special effects, which are way ahead of Bollywood standards.
Performances are poor. Abhishek Bachchan is no Hrithik Roshan or Akshay Kumar, although he tries hard in the action sequences, his body language or physique just doesn’t suit the role of a superhero with unprecedented physical power. His excess flab around the tummy area is quite clearly seen in the Drona costume. Priyanka Chopra is at her sexiest best! She oozes sensuality and performs the action scenes remarkably well.
Now the much hyped role of Kay Kay Menon, its such a dud. This has to be one of his worst roles ever. A great actor degraded by a stupid role. Jaya Bachchan has a very small role.
Overall, Drona could easily be placed a notch or two below some of the worst movies I have seen. Also, hardly have I witnessed an audience so restless during a movie. Goldie’s childhood promise to Abhishek could turn out to be his worst nightmare ever! At the box-office, Kidnap as a rival will severely make a dent in Drona’s collections. Weekend should be decent, but Monday onwards the fall could well be inevitable.
Positives : Special effects and Priyanka Chopra.Negatives : Almost everything else. Poor direction, bad story, below average performances.. to name a few.
Strictly avoid!

SING IS KINNG -REVIEW
Akshay Kumar, the superstar, is the biggest reason for all the hype surrounding the movie. Akshay’s fan following has increased tremendously in the past 2 years. Also his pairing with co-star Katrina Kaif has created box-office magic in the past.
The movie is directed by Anees Bazmee whose last two movies, No Entry and Welcome, were box office Blockbusters.
Producer Vipul Amruthlal Shah has left no stone unturned in promoting the movie. More than 5 crores has been spent just on promotion.
Is Singh Is Kinng worth all the hype it has generated over the past few weeks? Well to a certain extent, Yes.
First the story. Singh is Kinng is about Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar) a simpleton, from a village in Punjab, with a heart of gold. He always tries to do good, but exactly the opposite happens. He tries to help a villager and ends up ruining the whole village. Frustrated the villagers decide to send him far away to Australia, to bring back Lakhan Singh a.k.a Lucky, an underworld don in Australia.
But as always when Happy Singh sets out to do good, he does the opposite. Happy accompanied by his friend Tony land in Egypt instead of Australia. Here Happy meets Sonia (Katrina Kaif) and falls head over heels in love, at first sight.
Happy then makes his way to Australia. Without any money, Happy and Tony starve for days until Happy bumps into Rose Lady (Kirron Kher) who gives him a place to stay and food to eat. Happy then meets King Lucky, but due to an attack on the gang, Lucky is hurt and now cannot speak a word. After a lot of confusion, Happy is crowned the King (don) of the dangerous underworld gang. After a series of comical errors and misadventures, Sonia turns out to be Rose Lady’s daughter who returns to Australia with her boyfriend (Ranvir Shorey).
Does Happy end up with Sonia or does she marry her boyfriend? Does Happy succeed in taking Lucky back to his village in Punjab? Forms the rest of the hilarious tale.
Happy chasing a chicken only to end up ruining the whole village is side-splitting.
The scenes between Tony and Happy in Egypt and Australia. The dialogues are rib tickling, especially a few by Tony (Om Puri).
The way Singh (Happy) becomes King is brilliantly written, enacted and executed.
After the extremely entertaining first half, you expect an even better second. Unfortunately, it pales in comparison. The song picturised on Javeed Jaffrey was unnecessary. Also the lack of scenes between Tony and Happy is a negative as their chemistry was brilliant. The climax seemed to be hurried up and before you realise the movie comes to an abrupt end.
Another aspect that could go against the movie is, at times it’s hard to understand the Punjabi dialogues. Also at times in the first half, the voice is not in sync with the lip movement. Wonder why such minor flaws are overlooked in an A grade bollywood movie.
The music is above average. Few songs like ‘Teri Ore’ and ‘Singh is King’ title track standout.
Singh Is King Performances
Akshay Kumar is a great entertainer, he puts his heart and soul into the character of Happy. His comic timing is as good as ever. Katrina Kaif does exactly what’s required of her; she manages to look great in every scene. Must say, her smile has a very pleasing effect on the viewer. She’s also looking better with each passing film. Om Puri is brilliant and his chemistry with Akshay Kumar is one of the reasons to watch the movie. Sonu Sood has improved a lot acting wise since his debut in B grade flicks. Neha Dhupia looks hot, does a decent job. Javeed Jaffrey is funny. The rest of the character actors are good.
Singh Is King Verdict
Overall Singh is King is a typical Akshay Kumar mindless entertainer which has a great first half, beautifully picturised songs and a gorgeous Katrina Kaif. But what makes Singh is King more worthwhile is Akshay Kumar, who holds the movie together, well supported by Om Puri.
If your are a die hard Akshay fan and enjoyed his movies like Welcome, Heyy Babyy last year, dont think twice.. Just go for it! Others can wait for the DVD.
Ill go with 3 on 5 for the most hyped movie of the year!
Mission Istanbul movie Review
The Shootout At Lokhandwala team is back with Mission Istanbul. Director Apoorva Lakhia directs this film on terrorism. Vivek Oberoi, Zayed Khan, Nikitin Dheer (of Jodha Akbar fame) and Shabbir Ahluwalia form the lead cast. Suniel Shetty, Shriya Saran and Abhishek Bachchan have special appearances. Can the makers better their previous effort?
Mission Istanbul is about Vikas Sagar (Zayed Khan) one of the best journalist from India, who accepts a 3 month assignment with Al-Johara, an extremely controversial Instanbul-based news channel. The assignment comes at a time when Vikas, undergoing divorce with his wife Anjali (Shriya Saran), is at an all-time personal low. Once in Istanbul, Vikas meets Ghazni (Nikitan Dheer), the owner of Al-Johara and Owais Shah (Suniel Shetty), who heads the news channel.
Owais Shah is killed on Vikas’s first assignment in Afghanistan. Enter Rizwan Khan (Vivek Oberoi), a Turkish commando, who informs him that his life is in danger. How the Indian Journalist along with Rizwan manages to survive the battle against Ghazni forms the rest of the tale.
Mission Istanbul Review
Mission Istanbul is filled with good action and stunts but what the movie completely lacks is logic. Certain scenes are tough to digest and quite a few of them look silly. Two men take on the whole of Istanbul, well almost. They jump around like spiderman, take on 5 – 10 men at a time and usually survive without a scratch. The scenes involving a George Bush look-a-like looks stupid to say the least. And how does the hero pass the hand detection system? Quite simple, he rips both hands of a security personnel and conveniently uses it on the system, easy ain’t it? A frustrated villain smashes LCD Monitors left right and center. The second half drags, so much that you hardly care about the climax.
The 2 item numbers are filled with sufficient skin show to please the front benchers. Oh yeah there is Abhishek Bachchan in one of them, he tries hard to dance but fails as always. The background music is irritating and at times so loud that the dialogues are inaudible. The cinematography is good. Dialogues are over the top.
Coming to the performances I liked Shabbir Ahluwalia the most, with few good roles he can go a long way. Vivek Oberoi is strangely not in form in a role that perfectly suited his style of acting. Zayed Khan can’t act to save his life! Nikitin Dheer, the villain of Jodhaa Akbar, needs to work on his dialogue delivery. It’s high time Shriya Saran gets a chance in meatier roles. She was wasted in Awarapan and here she hardly has a 10 minute role. Suniel Shetty is okay in a special appearance. Shweta Bhardwaj is hot but expressionless throughout.
Overall, Mission Istanbul is strictly for action lovers. Others don’t expect much. Performances are weak and so is the script. Don’t expect much at the box-office. Flop!

Contract - Sequel to ‘Satya’, ‘Company’ or ‘Aag’?
After ‘Sarkar Raj’ , Ramgopal Varma teams up with Praveen Nicshol for yet another film on the underworld. This time out it goes as follows:

Well Ramu has always played it well with topics concerning the underworld; well now let’s see how he fuses in the terrorism angle.
Primarily the film is such a drab leaving you nowhere. Majority of the sequences and occurrences in the film make you wonder whether it has really been done by Ramgopal Varma or one of his so called ‘chelas’.
The narration, treatment, screenplay is almost void in the film. Prashant Pandey’s writing is extremely miserable and you are totally lost. One wonders why Ramu or the producers would engage in blasphemy by calling this film the completion of a trilogy after ‘Satya’ and ‘Company’.
The editing of the film by Amit Parmar and Nipun Gupta is vague. For a Ramgopal Varma film claiming to be the completion of a trilogy , it’s a big letdown. Take a look at films such as ‘Company’ and ‘Satya’, at no point where you bored or stranded in the middle of nowhere. This film ‘Contract’ has no relevancy whatsoever and requires serious trimming.
What was Shama Sikander doing with that so called item number or rave party sequence?
There are so many things that just annoy you and lack substance like the character Goonga’s(Upendra Limaye) wife, the silly dialogues of foolishness rather patriotism and the excessive use of the word ‘Secret’. Why did Ramu make such a film? ‘Secret’.
On the acting front Adhvik Mahajan is ok but nowhere close to characters that have remained with us since ‘Satya’ or ‘Company’. Sakshi Gulati too is just fine. Zakir Hussain and Upendra Limaye are not at their best. Sumeet Nijahawan fits the bill as RD.
For a great filmmaker like Ramgopal Varma , ‘Contract’ comes as a shock to all Ramu fans and aspiring directors who have always looked upto him. But, Ramgopal Varma ought to rise up and maybe take a break from films on the underworld or the occult and rather return to his ‘Rangeela ’days.

Kismat Konnection, as the title says is all about Kismat. The movie marks the return of veteran director Aziz Mirza (Yes Boss, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Chalte Chalte, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani). The one common feature in every Aziz Mirza film has been Shahrukh Khan but for the role of Raj Malhotra in Kismat Konnection, Aziz wanted someone about 15 years younger to SRK. Shahid Kapoor was roped in; Vidya Balan was signed opposite Shahid. There was a lot of curiosity around the lead pair, for most believed Vidya looked much older to Shahid. So does their chemistry work? Is Aziz Mirza in form after a long break from direction? Is Kismat Konnection worth a watch?
Before the review, the story of Kismat Konnection… Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapoor), an architect was a topper in studies, sports, acting and almost everything in college. His friends believe he would grace the cover of the Times Magazine in 3 years. 5 years pass by and Raj is still struggling for his first big break.
Frustrated with his Kismat, Raj meets Hasina Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla), who promises to free him from all his worries. Haseena says there is a force that could prove to be his lucky charm; he just needs to recognize it. Enter Priya (Vidya Balan), his lucky charm. Everything that Raj touches with Priya by his side turns into gold. With Priya, Raj believes he can fulfill his dreams. Soon Raj manages to secure his dream contract with Mr Gill (Om Puri), for the construction of a shopping mall. There are 2 issues though, Priya is fighting for the survival of a community centre and the shopping mall is set to be built on the centre…
Kismat Konnection Review
Kismat Konnection is a light entertainer, a simple love story without glitz, glamour and item numbers. But the major problem with Kismat Konnection is its pace, it gets terribly boring in most parts of the first half and some parts of the second. The music, key to a movie of this genre, is below average and mostly breaks the flow of the film. Also the chemistry between the lead pair is disappointing. Except for one moment on the cruise, the love story is filled with dull moments that are neither exciting nor does it make you feel for the characters.
Unlike Aziz Mirza’s previous movies like Yes Boss and Chalte Chalte which had just the right combination of romance and comedy, Kismat Konnection lacks both. Few glaring flaws in the story, Raj a struggling architect owns a comfortable luxuriously furnished house in Canada, a car along with a super large LCD Television. Not bad for struggler eh? The story in the second half too is hard to digest, especially the character of Boman Irani (Yes, he has a small special appearance).
Shahid Kapoor finally succeeds in looking and acting like SRK of the 90s. His dialogue delivery and body language were always similar and compared to the superstar, but here he could be easily mistaken as a almost perfect duplicate. You gotta give it to Shahid though; he manages to quite easily pull off the made-for-SRK role. Vidya Balan although hotter than her previous movies, needs to shed those extra pounds quickly. Quite frankly, the gorgeous Juhi Chawla looks a few years younger to Vidya!! Talking of Juhi, she’s brilliant in a 10 minute special appearance. Vishal Malhotra is great. Om Puri is good. Himani Shivpuri does what she always does, nothing unique in her 50th (just a guess) Punjabi role.
Overall, there is nothing much in Kismat Konnection that warrants a trip to the nearby movieplex. If you must watch this Aziz Mirza movie, go for it with absolutely no expectations. At the box-office, a, open week and no release last week would result in a decent opening.

Wish Harry Baweja had kept it simple. By the look of the film's first half, it seems a love story set in 2008 would have worked better as son Harman's debut venture instead of "Love Story 2050", which really is neither here nor there.
Yes, the movie moves across places and time, but unfortunately, it belongs nowhere, and goes nowhere. In fact, it just loses its way in a mess created by a bad script and worse story-telling.
It's neither a full blown romantic film nor a science fiction. Kindly put, "Love Story 2050" is a misdirected attempt, albeit an ambitious one, to launch Harman Baweja in a film that has been made with a simple intention - to stand apart from the rest.
It does stand apart, but not for its originality or technical brilliance, but the immense disappointment it leaves you with. What a waste of a Rs500 million budget!
No, the hype does not kill it. In fact, one steps into the first day's first show with no expectations, instead probably with a little sympathy for the film and its debutant hero as the giant Aamir Khan and his cutthroat marketing of "Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na" had been threatening to crush Harman's dream, even before he could prove himself.
A handful of people in the cinema were the first ominous sign of things to come. As Karan (Harman) makes a stylised entry on the big screen, you wait for the next big things to happen. But what does is pretty regular stuff... Love at first sight, Karan subsequently wooing Sana (Priyanka Chopra), the couple singing some melodious songs, while the eye-pleasing locales of South Australia roll in the background.
To be fair, till this point, the film, though moving at a slower-than-desired pace, manages to keep you interested.
But just when you think the lonely Karan is alone no more, it's time to go into the future. The Shanghai-lookalike Mumbai of 2050 is where he lands along with scientist Uncle Ya (Boman Irani) and Sana's siblings. Our happy hero of the first half is now on a mission, which progresses in a painfully confused manner.
Instead of the much talked about technical wizardry bowling one over, what knocks our senses dead is a haphazard bunch of sequences that don't connect cohesively and challenge logic every step of the way.
By now you genuinely feel sorry for Harman and even have no patience or appreciation for the special effects that inconsistently appear on screen. Some are amateurish, some impressive, but you simply don't care.
At almost 3 hours, this love story makes you weep for a happy ending, or just any ending.
Amidst all that's mediocre and bad, Harman makes his presence felt. For most of film he is at ease and dances like a dream, and except for a few scenes that require complex emoting, his acting passes muster. And yes, not just the face, even his voice and on screen mannerisms are quite like Hrithik Roshan's. So whether he likes it or not, comparisons will remain and it will take a lot of effort from him to come into his own.
Priyanka's performance fluctuates between likable and contrived, and despite the long length of her role, she doesn't really make a mark. Her stylist though does a good job of making her fit her two on screen personas.
The remaining cast has bit roles with nothing to do, and even the immensely talented Boman Irani fails to win you over.
The fault lies mainly with the script, screenplay and direction. Together, the three make you so weary that while you do notice that the music is pleasing and the sets beautifully crafted, you can't be bothered with applauding.
‘I don't need luck because I have love', is Karan's favourite line in the film. Well, Harman may have love, but for "Love Story 2050" to work, he'll only need luck. And lots of it.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Movie Review
The common question comes to mind when aamir khan is producing a film will be, how the movie is going to be? Coming to jaane tu ya jaane na, will it live up to the expectations?
Story:
While Jaane Tu is Imran’s debut vehicle, it is really Genelia who steals the show. The actress is a real livewire on screen and conveys those annoying feelings of jealousy, confusion, irritability and fake happiness without any problem.
Within the gang, who sport very Bombay nicknames such as Rats (Jai), Meow (Aditi), Bombs (Sandhya), Jiggy (Jignesh), the guys fare much better than the girls. Jiggy delights as the Gujju while Rotlu and Bombs together are smashing as the couple who discover each other as soul mates when left solo by their crushes, Jai and Aditi.
Supporting cast members like Ratna Pathak Shah as Jai’s mum, Paresh Rawal as the police inspector, Naseeruddin Shah, as Jai’s dead Rajput father who speaks from his portrait hold, fort magnificently.
Even the sub-plot of Jai’s rite of passage as a true male Rathore from Ranjhore family by fulfilling three conditions - beating up a person, spending time in jail and riding a horse - is largely saved and made palatable by way of the safe casting of the Shahs and Arbaaz and Sohail Khan, who appear as Rathore boys in the guise of dancing cowboys.
Its not a story which never heard or seen but then just like aamir said, It does revive good old college days and bring us a nice love story..
Performances:
Coming to acting, every character has performed well enough.
Debutant Imran looks cool and acting is admirable.
I am not too much in favour of genelia but still she was good in the movie...
It's a love story we all have seen earlier as well. But Abbas Tyrewala made it in such a way that movie looks fresh and touching.
Music: was as expected and well picturized. Thanks to Rehman. Imran would surely notch up a hit with this debut. The movie will surely have a decent opening.
Overall a sweet movie..
PS: The theatrical promo of rock on has shown arjun rampal starring with farhan akthar for the first time.
